Becoming a Fulton County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Unit is seeking qualified members from our community who meet the standards necessary to become a Fulton County Sheriff’s reserve deputy. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office invites you to consider a second career to serve in a state and nationally accredited law enforcement agency.

We offer an opportunity to work in one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the state and country. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office offers qualified individuals a chance to experience working with diverse cultures and communities in Atlanta and throughout Fulton County.

The Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy program is comprised of civic minded members like you, former full-time law enforcement officers, and retired deputies who wish to volunteer as Reserve Deputies. These deputies supplement the full-time deputies in a variety of duties throughout the Agency. This program is ideal for individuals who have an established career and do not wish to make a full transition to become a full-time Sheriff’s deputy. Reserve deputies can enjoy the best of both worlds, maintain their chosen careers while helping to provide law enforcement service to the citizens of Fulton County.

Reserve deputies receive the same training as full-time deputies and work alongside them in every aspect of the department’s operations.



The minimum qualifications for a Reserve Deputy Sheriff are as follows:

  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment;
  • Not have any felony or serious misdemeanor convictions that would prohibit you from possessing a firearm;
  • Be a United States citizen or have applied for U.S. citizenship;
  • Possess a High School diploma or GED equivalency;
  • Possess a Georgia driver’s license – must be able to pass a driver’s history review;
  • Successfully pass a rigorous background investigation;
  • Pass the police academy entrance exam;
  • Successfully pass a polygraph exam, psychological screening, & medical examination;
  • Successfully pass an Oral Interview.



Reserve Deputy cadets receive 408 hours of state certified instruction, the same training as all full-time law enforcement officers in the State of Georgia. Classes are held at the Fulton County Public Safety Training Center in College Park.  The training schedule normally follows this format:

  • Four-hour blocks of instruction, twice a week, on weeknights
  • Eight-hour blocks of instruction, on Saturdays or Sundays
  • All classes are scheduled according to the instructor’s availability

Academy classes are not conducted on days that fall on major holidays.

Normal in-service training occurs monthly and can range from 2-hour to 4-hour blocks of instruction.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Reserve Unit has two management commands under which the divisions operate: The Administration Command and the Operations Command.  These commands are led by two captains. The Administration Command consists of the Training & Special Operations Division, while the Operations Command consists of the following divisions: Law Enforcement, Jail, and Court Services.

The four divisions are under the leadership of a lieutenant, with sergeants supervising their respective sections and platoons.


Each division was created and designed to meet specific needs for our volunteers and the community.  These divisions allow us to focus specific deputies on specific task. By doing this, we always stand ready with experienced personnel in each area.  Members who join the reserve unit will choose which division they feel they will be the greatest asset to and can bring their appropriate skills to. From Motorcycles, to warrant enforcement, to jail response teams, and emergency response teams, our reserve unit has it all.



The duties of the reserve deputy are diverse. State certified members may perform regular law enforcement duties such as:

  • Responding to natural disasters, medical emergencies, crime scenes, suspicious activities, altercations and requests for law enforcement assistance.
  • Providing public assistance and encourages good relationships between the public and the sheriff’s office.
  • Administering first aid to injured persons.
  • Performing interviews and taking written statements from crime victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Preparing and submitting written reports for activities requiring law enforcement interaction.
  • Apprehending suspects, making arrests and transporting them to the Fulton County Jail.
  • Enforcing traffic laws, issuing citations, directing traffic and assists disabled vehicles.
  • Executing warrants, serving subpoenas, testifying in court, etc.
