The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of Reserve Sergeant Mike Frey. Sgt. Frey was killed in a motorcycle accident Sunday, June 4, 2017. The sergeant was part of a two-person team on motorcycles providing the escort for a funeral procession in Braselton, Georgia. According to the paramedics, Sgt. Frey was killed instantly when the driver of pickup truck made a left turn in front of him. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
Sgt. Frey was days shy of marking his 28th anniversary with the FCSO Reserve Unit. During his almost 3 decades with the Reserve Unit, he served in numerous capacities. At the time of his death, the sergeant was the leader of the Reserve’s Motorcycle Unit. He loved motorcycles and owned several over the years.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Unit is a branch of volunteer deputies who are certified law enforcement officers who donate their expertise, time, and resources to the agency. Most members have fulltime jobs and work in professions elsewhere. 70-year-old Sgt. Frey was a very active member of the Reserve/Retiree Unit and took pride in his work.
His widow wants his colleagues to know that he loved the Sheriff’s Office and working alongside the other reservists. She said that he considered it an honor to serve the citizens of Fulton County.
Sgt. Frey was a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries. After returning stateside, he worked 40 years for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier and numerous other roles including his last assignment with the Postal Inspection Service.
Sgt. Frey is survived by his mother, wife, son, stepson, and a host of relatives. A memorial service for Sgt. Frey will be held Saturday, June 17th at 2 p.m. at the Unity Atlanta Church in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Georgia Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. (GA-C.O.P.S.) or the Disabled American Veterans (DAV.org).
